East West Power Group Experiences

East West Power Ltd Group’s Experience in Barge Mounted Power plants

East West Power Ltd (EWP) Group is one of the pioneers in this field of barge mounted power plants. They have been involved in the design, construction and operation and maintenance of barge mounted power plants since 1993.

The first power barge designed and built by the EWP Group is the Victoria I, which comprises one unit of 105MW Westinghouse W501-D5 Gas Turbine, associated Westinghouse generator and other auxiliary equipments, for operation in the Philippines. This barge was constructed at the Sabah Shipyard in Labuan, Malaysia and was launched 18 May 1994. Westmont Power, was the O&M contractor for this power barge. The Victoria I power barge is today still in operation, but in the Dominican Republic, together with the 7500DWT fuel storage barge Sky I, which was also built by the EWP Group.

The Victoria II power barge, which comprises one unit of 115MW Westinghouse W501-D5A Gas Turbine, associated Westinghouse generator and other auxiliary equipment was the next power barge designed and built by the EWP Group, in 1996 for operation in Ecuador. This barge, which was also constructed at the Sabah Shipyard in Labuan, Malaysia, was launched on 26 Nov 1995. Westmont Power was also the O&M contractor for this power barge. The Victoria II power barge is currently still in operation in the Ecuador, together with the 7500DWT fuel storage barge Sky III, which was also built by the Group.

The other power barges designed and built by the Group from 1995 to 1998 are the Bijoyer Aalo I and II and Victoria V, VII and VIII.

The Bijoyer Aalo I and II, together comprises 2 units of 48MW Westinghouse W251-B11 gas turbines, associated Westinghouse generators, 2 heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) and 1 unit of 60MW MHI SCIF-30AX steam turbine and associated generator, was designed and built for operation in Bangladesh. This is the first barge mounted GT/ST combined cycle power plant built in the world. The Bijoyer Aalo I and II which together have an output of 156MW, are currently in operation under Westmont Power in Bangladesh.

The Victoria V and VII power barges also makes up a 156MW GT/ST combined cycle power plant, same as the Bijoyer Aalo I & II.

The Victoria VIII power barge, which comprises 1 unit of 48MW Westinghouse W251-B11 gas turbine, a Westinghouse generator and auxiliary equipment, was operated by Westmont Power in Kenya from 1996, together with the 7500DWT fuel storage barge Sky II, which was also built by the EWP Group.

So there will not be any shortage of expertise and experience with respect to the design, construction and operation and maintenance of barge mounted power plants within the Group. EWP Group with their vast experiences in operating power barges also have very close associations and strategic partnerships with various shipyards in Batam, Labuan or China, which have the capacity and capability to build power barges.

Pictures of some of the power barges and fuel barges which were designed, built and operated by companies associated with the Group, including drawings of typical barge design prepared by our naval architect, are attached at the end of this write-up.
